Legends

What is a myth or legend?
  • A legend is a story that’s based on something that happened that is true but it was has been over exaggerated.
  • A myth is a story that is probably really untrue but it is important to the culture that it comes from.
  • They are stories from the past.
  • Most myths tell us how something was created for example:  How Maungarei came to be or How the Heilala flower came to be.
  • They can take place anywhere - from lots of different countries.
  • Anyone or anything can be a character in a myth.  There are even magical creatures sometimes.


Today we are going to read a Tongan myth about a cluster (group of stars) and how they came to be.  A group of stars that is famous, is called a constellation.  Two examples are:

“They were always getting into trouble.”


“The people were getting angry about the boys behaviour.”
When you do something bad, people tell you off.

That you might get grounded by your mum or dad.

You might get growled by the teacher.
I think these boys make lots of trouble.

I think they’re kind of naughty.

They might be bad.
The people were angry at the boys behaviour but Ma’afu loves his son’s.

“Ma’afu didn’t want to send his sons there.”
Dads don’t send their children to dangerous places.

Sometimes Dads have to make hard choices for their children.
Ma’afu is a man that loves his son’s.
Ma’afu is a very kind man.
Ma’afu is a handsome chief.
